Custom Giant Nypro Expanding in North Carolina
Custom injection molding giant Nypro Inc. is expanding its Mebane, N.C., facility.
Nypro spokesman Al Cotton said in a phone interview that Nypro’s new business in rigid packaging and healthcare products is behind the project. The facility already mainly molds packaging and does some healthcare production.
Nypro, based in Clinton, Mass., will add 75,000 square feet to the current 113,000-square-foot facility and expects to complete it in six to eight months, Cotton said. About 50 to 60 jobs could be created in the program. Mebane now employs about 300, half of them part-time employees.
Local news reports placed the investment at $15 million, although Cotton would not confirm that figure. Equipment purchases could comprise nearly half that total.
One report stated the building addition will meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating.
Nypro opened in Mebane’s industrial park in 2007, partly as a result of government incentives.
Plastics News estimates Nypro’s injection molding sales in North America last year at $665 million, which would rank it seventh largest in the market. It runs 13 molding plants in North America and has 41 locations in 14 countries. Last year Jabil Circuit Inc. of St. Petersburg, Fla., acquired the company.
